Glossary of Common Terms R–W

Registration The fitting of two or more images in perfect alignment with one another.

Request for Quotation [RFQ] The compliation of specifications for a project, which is then provided to vendors to initiate the development of an estimate.

Resolution The quantification of print out quality using the number of spots or dots per inch.

RGB Abbreviation for red, green, blue, the additive color primaries. Computers and television screens use RGB.

Right Reading An image whose orientation looks like the original as opposed to a flopped image.

Rule Up A press sheet on which rules have been drawn to show the trim, final size, perforations, scoring and folding.

Saddle Stitch Binding multiple sheets together by opening the signatures [sheets of paper] in the center and gathering and stitching them with a wire through the fold line. the folded sheets rest on supports, called saddles in the stitcher. A common binding method for brochures and booklets.

Scoring A process used to get a crisp and accurate fold on paper. Scoring producesan embossed ridge on the paper. This "bump" should be inside the fold. The heavier and thicker the paper, the wider the score. Generally, the width of the score should be at least the same as the caliper of the paper.

Screen Tint Color generated by dots instead of solid ink coverage.

Script Charge In digital printing, refers to the additional cost incurred when a printer must recalibrate his equipment to print on a paer that is not programmed in.

Sheet A single sheet of paper.

Sheetwise To print one side of a sheet of paper with one plate, then turn the sheet over and print the other side with another plate using the same gripper and opposite side guide.

Shingling For large signatures the center or gutter margin s varied according to the position of the page in the signature and the bulk of the paper.

Short Fold An effect where the pages or panels in a printed piece are deliberately sized and folded short of the spine.

Short Trim An error in the bindery where pages are trimmed too short.

Show-through When a printed image on one side of the sheet is visable through the other side of the paper.

Side Stitching A method of common binding where the folded signatures or pages are stitched along the side near the gutter margin. The pages will not lie flat.

Signature Also called "sigs", for short. A signature is a sheet of paper, which, when folded and cut, forms a section of brochure, book or pamphlet. the most common are 4-, 8-, 16-, and 32-page signatures.

Spiral Wire Binding This binding uses a spiral of continuous wire or plastic looped or wound through holes. Also called coil binding.

Standard Die A die that is used for common printing jobs, such as certain folders, where no customization is required.

Tack The property of cohesion between particles; the separation force of ink needed for proper transfer and trapping on multicolor presses.

Thermography Printing method using colorless resin powder that takes on the color of the underlying ink to create a raised printed surface.

Trapping In pre-press, this term refers to how much overprinting colors overlap to eliminate white lines between colors in printing.

Trimming The finishing operation where sheets are cut down to the exact size specified for the job.

Variable Data Printing The ability, in digital printing, to change printed information from copy to copy offering greater flexibility than offset printing.

Varnish A clear or tinted protective coating applied to a printed sheet for protection or appearance.

Watermark A translucent logo or design created during paper manufacture by embossing a dandy roll.

Wire-O® Wire-O® is used for double wire binding.

Work and Turn To print one side of a sheet or paper, then turn it over from left to right and print the second side using the same gripper and plate but opposite side guide.
